CZR i23 Carbon Rims

Reinforced spoke beds improve overall wheel strength and durability while also minimizing weight in areas where less strength, and therefore material, is needed. CZR i23 rims feature 3mm of asymmetrical spoke offset and a 24mm section depth to improve radial stiffness and maximize energy transfer without being affected by crosswinds like other wheels with deeper profiles.

Solid Strip & TCS Tape

Durable nylon strip that lies between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tubeless tape from pushing into the spoke holes and ensures a smooth interface between the tire and rim. The smooth surface makes it easier to mount a tire by preventing air from escaping around the bead at each indent during inflation. Solid Strip also protects the airtight system from puncture in the case of a broken spoke.

2-cross or 3-cross lacing

CZR i23 gravel wheels with 24 spokes feature a 2-cross lacing pattern to increase radial stiffness and decrease weight. CZR i23 wheels with 28 spokes feature a 3-cross pattern to increase durability while still providing ample radial stiffness due to the additional spokes.

Frequency Hubs

The world’s best carbon rims deserved to be paired with high-quality hubs that further improve the performance of a lightweight, dependable carbon wheelset. Frequency hubs feature a low-drag, 6-pawl design that alternates contact between two sets of 3-pawl groupings to provide a responsive 5 degrees of freehub engagement. Frequency hubs laced to CZR i23 wheels feature lightweight pawl springs that minimize drag and therefore improve efficiency for drop bar usage.

Aerodynamic Wing Spokes

Pillar racing spokes that are cold forged into an aerodynamic wing shape that reduces drag at the trailing end of each spoke. As a result, wing spokes improve overall efficiency while still retaining the gram-conscious weights of traditional bladed spokes.

Sapim alloy nipples

All CZR i23 wheels feature time-tested Sapim alloy nipples to further reduce overall wheel weight while still exceeding the durability requirements of gravel.

HOW DOES RIM WIDTH AFFECT TIRE VOLUME AND PROFILE?

Wider rims will cause a tire to also have a wider width, with more air volume within the tire and a flatter tire tread profile than designed for. As a general rule of thumb, a 2mm increase or decrease of inner rim width will result in a tire section width increase or decrease of 1mm. For example, our Nano 40 tire has a tire section width of 40mm on a 21mm inner rim width, however it will have a tire section width of 41mm on a 23mm inner rim width.

15MM END CAPS ON FREQUENCY HUBS?

All CZR i30 front wheels feature hubs with 15mm end caps, but CZR i23 front wheels are assembled using Frequency hubs with 12x100mm front wheel spacing. However, we also sell a 15mm end cap kit on our Replacement Hub Parts page for riders with forks that require the use of a 15mm axle, such as Lauf forks. Swapping the end caps does not require any special tools.

WHY DO CZR i23 WHEELS HAVE A HOOKED BEAD WHILE CZR i30 ARE HOOKLESS?

CZR i23 rims feature a hooked bead because doing so provides a more dependable connection between the tire and rim when running a tire at the higher air pressures that are common with adventure road and gravel riding. CZR i30 rims feature a hookless bead because the smooth bead surface allows for more material to be used in an area when strength is incredibly important. Both CZR i23 and CZR i30 rims are compatible with any tires that comply with ETRTO standards.

ARE THERE TRICKS TO INSTALLING A TIRE ON AN ASYMMETRICAL RIM?

Asymmetrical rims feature a "short" and "long" side. It is helpful to always mount both sides of the tire onto the rim on the "short side" of the rim. The short side of the rim provides the shortest distance between the rim leg/bead and the valley of the rim. Once the first tire bead is completely on the rim, it can be pulled over the rubber portion of the valve and positioned at the deepest part of the rim valley. The other side of the tire can then be installed onto the rim with the least amount of resistance.

TCS (Tubeless Compatible System) is our industry-leading tubeless rim/tire system designed to international ETRTO and ISO standards.

WTB carbon components are designed to provide a perfect blend of stiffness and compliance while also proving to be nearly indestructible.

Additional carbon at each spoke bed improves overall rim strength and durability while also minimizing weight in areas where less strength, and therefore material, is needed.

Spoke holes are drilled at an angle to match the natural spoke path between a rim and hub. Eliminates binding and lateral loading of the nipples to increase wheel durability.

Sloped rim valley allows the bead of the tire to easily and smoothly move into place during installation and inflation.

Installed between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tape from sagging at each spoke hole and make tire inflation easier while also preventing puncture from a broken spoke.

Freehub ratchet system quickly alternates between two groups of three pawls each to provide quick engagement and trusted durability.

Cold forged Pillar racing spokes provide an aerodynamic wing shape to reduce drag at the trailing end of each spoke and improve overall efficiency while trimming weight.

I do not recommend.

After traveling about 6,000 kilometers, my rear rim cracked in nine places, forcing me to end the trip. Very bad impression of these i23 rims.

Bought two sets of these.

Awesome wheels. Use on gravel, light singletrack, and road. No issues after 1000 miles so bought a second set to make changing out tires easy.

I purchased my set of CZR i23’s in late 2021 for my Salsa Warbird based on the reputation of WTB’s quality products, price-performance balance and on WTB’s impressive warranty for these wheels. Out of the box, the wheel weight was within 2 grams of spec. NICE!!!

Because of supply chain issues, getting 15mm end caps to fit my bike took several months. By summer of 2022, my wheels were finally rolling. This wheel set was to be my fondo ride/raceday event set. Breaking in the bearings and tuning the tire and wheel combo took much of the summer. Finally, with consultation from WTB’s customer support with tuning and tweaking, the wheels were ready to go. AND perform they did. The wheels spun up easily and true and were a comparable performance match to my XTR hub wheel set. They have great low rolling performance and a comfortable riding compliance. I ride with the reassuring feeling that should something happen to my wheels (within the guidelines of the warranty), WTB will stand behind them.
