Frequency hubs feature a low-drag, 6-pawl design that alternates contact between two sets of 3-pawl groupings to provide a responsive 5 degrees of freehub engagement.

Solid Strip & TCS Tape

Durable nylon strip that lies between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tubeless tape from pushing into the spoke holes and ensures a smooth interface between the tire and rim. The smooth surface makes it easier to mount a tire by preventing air from escaping around the bead at each indent during inflation. Solid Strip also protects the airtight system from puncture in the case of a broken spoke.

3-Cross Lacing and Nipples

Too many companies are trying to save weight by offering "enduro" wheels with 2-cross lacing patterns and inadequate alloy nipples. While those are suitable for XC and light trail usage, there's no replacement for the longterm reliability of a 3-cross lacing pattern with standard nipples holding it all together.

30mm inner rim width

Enduro and aggressive trail riders across the globe have adopted 30mm as the go-to size for tires in the most common widths of 2.4-2.5". Most trail and enduro tires are now designed to be installed on a 30mm rim and doing so will optimize the air volume, sidewall support and tire profile of those tires. As XC becomes more aggressive and companies offer wider XC tires, these lightweight 30mm rims are also an excellent choice for XC riders who prioritize confidence over shaving grams.

Technology

TCS (Tubeless Compatible System) is our industry-leading tubeless rim/tire system designed to international ETRTO and ISO standards.

6069 is the perfect aluminum alloy for bicycle rims due to its high tensile and fatigue strength, minimal weight, and excellent anti-corrosion properties.

Spoke holes are drilled at an angle to match the natural spoke path between a rim and hub. Eliminates binding and lateral loading of the nipples to increase wheel durability.

Two vertical supports drastically increase rim strength while also improving lateral stiffness and minimizing deflection in rocky, unpredictable terrain.

Rim ends are hydraulically pressed over an extruded aluminum insert that matches the inner cavity of the rim and is further reinforced by industrial epoxy.

Sloped rim valley allows the bead of the tire to easily and smoothly move into place during installation and inflation.

Installed between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tape from sagging at each spoke hole and make tire inflation easier while also preventing puncture from a broken spoke.

Freehub ratchet system quickly alternates between two groups of three pawls each to provide quick engagement and trusted durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES RIM WIDTH AFFECT TIRE VOLUME AND PROFILE?

Wider rims will cause a tire to also have a wider width, with more air volume within the tire and a flatter tire tread profile than designed for. As a general rule of thumb, a 2mm increase or decrease of inner rim width will result in a tire section width increase or decrease of 1mm. For example, our Nano 40 tire has a tire section width of 40mm on a 21mm inner rim width, however it will have a tire section width of 41mm on a 23mm inner rim width.

WHAT WIDTH TCS TUBELESS TAPE FOR MY WHEELS?

All WTB wheels are sold with TCS Tubeless Tape preinstalled. If you need to replace it at any time, WTB recommends using tape that is 5mm wider than your inner rim width. For example, an i30 rim would require 35mm TCS Tubeless Tape.

WHICH LENGTH OF TCS TUBELESS VALVE FOR MY PROTERRA WHEELS?

All WTB alloy rims and wheels are best paired with a 34mm valve stem, which is preinstalled on every Proterra wheel.

Dependable 6069 Alloy

Proterra rims are extruded from WTB’s premier 6069 aluminum alloy to optimize strength while a bead blast finish and durable water-transfer decals keep your wheels looking fresh. Our extensive testing shows other 6000-series alloy to be less ding-resistant, while stiffer 7000-series alloys result in a harsher ride feel and tend to increase pinch flats. Good wheel, not GREAT wheel

I bought this wheel to replace the stock WTB wheel on my Cannondale Jekyll enduro that I bent in Moab. It appears to be an upgrade from the stock wheel, and it is quite nice. It had a tag on it that read "Hand built by Coco" and the name was hand written. However, I had just finished building a new wheel for another bike so just for fun I put it on my truing stand and guess what? It needed adjustment because it was not true! Love WTB, but I don't think I should have to true a wheel that just came from the factory. Coco you need to up your game!

Light rim with good hub engagement

This is a replacement for a damaged stock wheel on my Stumpjumper EVO. It feels lighter and hub engagement is quicker. This was a good upgrade from the stock rim at a really good price.

Premium wheel at a mid range price

I needed a new rear after taco-ing an E13. I decided on the Proterra based on specs and price. Upon receiving it, I was also impressed with it's low key looks (similar to I9). I tested it right out of the gate on very gnarly rocky trails, and it passed with flying colors. Still straight as an arrow with even spoke tension. Thanks WTB!

Tough rims, strong hubs, killer value

The rear end of a stiff hardtail is not a gentle place to be, especially on New England chunk. I replaced a 27.5+ carbon rear wheel with these in 29 and the difference is night and day for comfort and a nicely damped ride - note that I run these with an insert and Exo plus tires. I’ve been spoiled by multiple name brand, high engagement wheels and expensive rims, and for the money I don’t think you can do much better than these wheels. I’ve bikepacked and tackled nasty singletrack on these, and I’m no lightweight. They’re clearly well built and great quality, and the hub is easy to service. 10/10 happy customer - I also have the lighter version of these as a “gravel” wheelset for the same hardtail and they’ve been excellent.

Excellent Mid-tier Wheel

Excellent value for a durable wheel to use on western Colorado's rocky trails. The 5º engagement is quite nice coming from an older WTB hub with 12º engagement. The sound of the 6-paw design is a little obnoxious, but not i9 level at least, but you have to pay a lot more for a quiet hub.
