Proterra Light i23 wheels check all the boxes for a fast and light alloy wheelset. The 23mm inner rim width provides the optimal tire profile for adventure road and gravel tires ranging from 30-42mm. Its open-cavity profile features thin, weight-optimized walls that provide the perfect blend of stiffness, resilience and efficiency. Subdued graphics on a bead blast finish ensure these wheels won't clash with the colors of your dream bike. We didn't skimp on hubs either. Top-tier EZO bearings, a swift 6-pawl freehub and 5 degrees of engagement provide the look, sound and feel you expect of a high-end tubeless wheelset.

Frequency Hub

Frequency hubs feature a low-drag, 6-pawl design that alternates contact between two sets of 3-pawl groupings to provide a responsive 5 degrees of freehub engagement.

Solid Strip & TCS Tape

Durable nylon strip that lies between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tubeless tape from pushing into the spoke holes and ensures a smooth interface between the tire and rim. The smooth surface makes it easier to mount a tire by preventing air from escaping around the bead at each indent during inflation. Solid Strip also protects the airtight system from puncture in the case of a broken spoke.

3-Cross Lacing and Alloy Nipples

23mm inner rim width

Drop bar bikes with tires ranging from 32-40mm are best paired with a 23mm inner rim width, while a 25 inner rim width is best suited for the same bikes running 41-50mm tires. Choosing the correct inner rim width for the tires you ride will optimize the air volume and tire profile of your specific tire and rim combo.

Technology

TCS (Tubeless Compatible System) is our industry-leading tubeless rim/tire system designed to international ETRTO and ISO standards.

6069 is the perfect aluminum alloy for bicycle rims due to its high tensile and fatigue strength, minimal weight, and excellent anti-corrosion properties.

Spoke holes are drilled at an angle to match the natural spoke path between a rim and hub. Eliminates binding and lateral loading of the nipples to increase wheel durability.

Rim ends are hydraulically pressed over an extruded aluminum insert that matches the inner cavity of the rim and is further reinforced by industrial epoxy.

Installed between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tape from sagging at each spoke hole and make tire inflation easier while also preventing puncture from a broken spoke.

Sloped rim valley allows the bead of the tire to easily and smoothly move into place during installation and inflation.

Internationally standardized to ensure rim and tire compatibility are as consistent and user-friendly as possible for both WTB’s products and those of our competitors.

Freehub ratchet system quickly alternates between two groups of three pawls each to provide quick engagement and trusted durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DOES RIM WIDTH AFFECT TIRE VOLUME AND PROFILE?

Wider rims will cause a tire to also have a wider width, with more air volume within the tire and a flatter tire tread profile than designed for. As a general rule of thumb, a 2mm increase or decrease of inner rim width will result in a tire section width increase or decrease of 1mm. For example, our Nano 40 tire has a tire section width of 40mm on a 21mm inner rim width, however it will have a tire section width of 41mm on a 23mm inner rim width.

15MM END CAPS ON FREQUENCY HUBS?

All Proterra Light i23 wheels are built around Frequency hubs with 12x100mm front axle spacing. However, we also sell a 15mm end cap kit on our Replacement Hub Parts page for riders with forks that require the use of a 15mm axle, such as Lauf forks. Swapping the end caps does not require any special tools.

WHAT WIDTH TCS TUBELESS TAPE FOR MY WHEELS?

All WTB wheels are sold with TCS Tubeless Tape preinstalled. If you need to replace it at any time, WTB recommends using tape that is 5mm wider than your inner rim width. For example, an i30 rim would require 35mm TCS Tubeless Tape.

WHICH LENGTH OF TCS TUBELESS VALVE FOR MY PROTERRA WHEELS?

All WTB alloy rims and wheels are best paired with a 34mm valve stem, which comes preinstalled on all Proterra wheels.

Dependable 6069 Alloy

Proterra rims are extruded from WTB’s premier 6069 aluminum alloy to optimize strength while a bead blast finish and durable water-transfer decals keep your wheels looking fresh. Our extensive testing shows other 6000-series alloy to be less ding-resistant, while stiffer 7000-series alloys result in a harsher ride feel and tend to increase pinch flats. I have had the rim crack around the spoke holes in multiple places on the i23 and i25. I ride gravel, ans smooth single track, and tarseal. I do quite a few km, and some touring. I'm sorry but the rims are not up to it. I have had two rear rims, and one front rim crack in the soace of 3 years. I do not recommend, and beware wtb will not replace a rim after a period of 2yrs from new.

Sturdy build but CANT remove WTB Venture tires!

Stock wheelset on my Evil Chamois Hagar. Bought new wheels and no matter what tire lever used I can't unseat these tires and rims! Incredibly frustrating and so glad this didn't happen out on the trails or this would've been a long hike out. Careful, y'all!

Lasted a couple rides and so far so good

Nice clickety click to it, tried to set up tubeless but the riddlers didn't take so just set up some tubes and they handled road and gravel nicely

Spokes Pulled Through on First Gravel Ride

These wheels came stock on my 2022 Salsa Journeyer. The spokes pulled through the wheel on first contact with gravel, after about 75 miles on pavement. I returned the bike to the selling dealer, who provided warranted wheelset replacement. So far, so good with the replacement wheels. The dealer told me that WTB had some component quality defects and that many Salsa bikes were coming back for warranty. I am satisfied in that Salsa and likely ultimately WTB honored the warranty.
