How to Set Up Tubeless Tires Like a Pro

Tubeless tires are one of the best upgrades you can make to your ride—better traction, fewer flats, lower pressures, and that smooth, planted feel that makes you grin ear to ear. But the process of setting them up can feel intimidating if you haven’t done it before.

Fear not—we’re here to demystify tubeless and walk you through the process like a seasoned shop tech (minus the grease-stained apron). Whether it’s your first time or you’re just chasing a better seal, here’s how to set up your tubeless tires like a pro...

What You'll Need

Before you dive in, gather your gear:

WTB tubeless bike wheel with tape

Step 1: Tape It Right

Use tubeless-specific rim tape to create an airtight seal inside your rim. Make sure it’s the correct width (we recommend 5mm wider than your internal rim width) and overlap the end by about 2–3 inches.

Pro Tip: Start and end at the valve hole, keep a good level of tension, and press the tape down firmly as you go—any wrinkles or gaps can lead to slow leaks later.

Step 2: Install the Valve

Punch a small hole in the tape at the valve hole (just enough for the valve to fit snugly), insert the tubeless valve, and tighten the locking nut from the outside. Don’t overtighten—it just needs to be snug.

Pro Tip: Give it a quick tug to make sure it’s seated properly before moving on.

Step 3: Mount the Tire

Mount one bead of the tire onto the rim, then add your sealant inside the tire before popping on the second bead.

Sealant Shortcut: If you prefer, install both beads first and inject sealant through the valve core using a sealant injector (just be sure to remove the core first).

Seat the second bead onto the rim by hand or using plastic tire levers (no metal levers—trust us).

Step 4: Inflate and Seat the Beads

Time for the magic. Inflate the tire quickly to “snap” the beads into place.
• If you’re using a floor pump, make sure the beads are well-lubed with soapy water to help them slide into position.
• If the tire isn’t seating, try an air compressor or tubeless inflator canister for a faster hit of air.

Listen for those satisfying pops as the beads seat on the rim. Once seated, spin and shake the tire to spread the sealant evenly inside.

Step 5: Check and Ride

Set your desired pressure, reinstall the valve core (if removed), and follow these steps to achieve the best possible seal.

Pro Tip: Check pressure after 24 hours. Some small drop is normal, but if it’s flat, double-check your tape, valve, or bead seating.

Ride On

You did it—you’re officially riding tubeless! That means fewer pinch flats, lower pressures for better grip, and more time shredding instead of fixing flats trailside.
