It is that time of year again, ride all morning and eat all afternoon. The Appetite Seminar, as it is know as in Marin County, started back in 1975 when a dozen riders took their one speed “clunkers” up the mountain then down the now famous Repack trail. This year will be a little different, the Steelhead trout in Cascade Canyon are threatened therefore an alternative route has been set instead of running Repack.

We love dirt, there is no denying it. However, we must often traverse the city streets to get to the dirt. This is not an easy task when you have freeways and cars everywhere. With a few exceptions, most all mountain bikers are faced with this challenge. Imagine if you could ride a “bicycle freeway” to your local trail, school, office, or pub.

On December 10th, 2010, we celebrated the reopening of the Cal Park Tunnel, connecting San Rafael to Larkspur in Marin County, California. I say reopening because the tunnel was first opened in 1884 for trains. Now it is open for cyclists and pedestrians. WTB and it’s non-profit affiliate TAM (Transportation Alternatives for Marin) led by WTB President, Patrick Seidler, played a crucial role in reopening the tunnel. We are very proud of this accomplishment and believe this is the first step in making the “Bicycle Freeway” a reality.

If he’s not fighting traffic or dodging rangers, Jason Moeschler, 29, is enjoying his life in the clean air of Marin County, where he lives down the street from WTB/Fox/Santa Cruz teammate Mark Weir, and works from home for Wilderness Trail Bikes (WTB).

Moeschler began racing bikes at age 16 and over the course of his racing career has become a three-time Mountain Bike World Championship Competitor, 1997 US Junior National Champion, as well as a three-time Downieville All Mountain Pro Champion.

KLUNKERZ, the critically acclaimed film that details mountain biking’s origins, will be showing at the Fairfax Documentary Film Festival on Friday, March 28th. The first showing, at 7:30 p.m., sold out quickly, so the festival added another showing at 10 p.m. This will be a special screening of the popular film, as the parking lot of the Fairfax Theater is where some of the first organized mountain bike rides in history began in 1974. Additionally, many of the cast and crew members will be in attendance and participating in a Q&A after the film.

Peri’s Silver Dollar, a local bar just up the street from the theater, is hosting a photo exhibit of Wende Cragg’s shots from 1976-78. There will be music by The RoadOilers, who contributed to the soundtrack of the film, as well as a vintage bike display. KLUNKERZ debuted in early 2007. It has now played in dozens festivals across the globe. According to filmmaker Billy Savage, “international audiences are amazed to see who this small group of hippie/athletes from Marin County created a pass time for the masses, a multi-billion dollar industry, and an Olympic event.”
